SPACS Exonerated Amid Power Abuse Accusations
The Anambra Concerned Youths Assembly (ACYA) has responded to allegations in a viral video accusing the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SPACS) of the State Police Command in Enugwu-Ukwu of serious abuse and extortion.
The group argues that the video is fabricated, describing it as an attempt to unjustly damage the squad’s hard-earned reputation.
The spokesperson of the group, Mr. Emmanuel Edozie, stated that the group is collectively refuting the claims of misconduct made by Evangelist Ebube Joseph.
He contended that the footage circulating on social media is part of a coordinated effort by cult groups to discredit SPACS amid its ongoing fight against cultism in the state.
According to the group, an independent inquiry conducted by media professionals revealed that those purportedly arrested and mistreated by Anti-Cultism operatives were, in fact, cult members who suffered abuse from fellow cultists during initiation.
According to the group, the findings indicate that the events were not only staged but also misrepresented.
The ACYA called on the public, particularly the Nigeria Police, to dismiss the videos produced by self-proclaimed content creator Evangelist Ebube Joseph. The group also stated that it is aware of his negative reputation and accused him of being linked to an unlawful group allegedly fostering unrest in Anambra State.
In response to the alleged arrests and supposed maltreatment of victims, the youth group criticized the justification for the use of items such as a lighter flame, cutlass, and hammer for torture.
They argued that the injuries appeared to be marks commonly associated with cult initiation rather than evidence of police brutality, contrary to Ebube Joseph’s claims.
“How can Evangelist Ebube Joseph present evidence of initiation marks inflicted by cultists on potential recruits and attribute this to the alleged actions of the Nigeria Police Force, which is dedicated to combating cult-related crimes in Anambra State?
“Moreover, how much were cult leaders paying the self-proclaimed content creator, Ebube Joseph—who is alleged to be part of an illegal organization—to carry out these harmful actions against Anti-Cultism advocates?” the ACYA queried.
When contacted by phone, Evangelist Ebube Joseph stated that he stands by his video clips and added that others have intervened in the matter.
He also disclosed that he has been approached by the leadership of the Anti-Cultism Squad regarding the issue.
