The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has restructured its leadership in Anambra State with the inauguration of a new State Executive Committee (EXCO), following the formal dissolution of the former leadership in accordance with the party’s constitutional provisions.
At a well-attended state congress held on Monday at Beautiful Gate Hotel, Awka, Hon. David Patrick Chukwudifu was elected State Chairman and he is expected to pilot the affairs of the party in the state over the next four years.
The newly inaugurated EXCO, which emerged through a consensus arrangement, includes Barrister Udeze Arinzechukwu Daniel as State Secretary; Hon. Austin Onyeka as Assistant Secretary; Hon. Samuel Orji as Treasurer; Ahmed Hauwa as Assistant Treasurer; Chioma Okonkwo as Financial Secretary; Udensi Samuel as Organising Secretary; Barrister Obumse Nwachukwu as Legal Adviser; and Nweke Juliet as Publicity Secretary, among others.
The leadership transition began with a motion for the dissolution of the former EXCO, moved by Hon. Celestine Osunkwo. This was followed by a motion for the conduct of a fresh congress, moved by Hon. Prince Chukwuemeka Achufusi, former Supervisory Councillor for Agriculture in Anaocha Local Government Area, and seconded by Hon. Chinedu Odozor of Onitsha South Local Government Area.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Chukwudifu expressed appreciation to party stakeholders and members for the confidence reposed in him, describing his emergence as both humbling and divinely ordained.
He stated that the NDC is steadily positioning itself as a formidable political force in Nigeria through its grassroots-driven ideology and people-centred policies.
Chukwudifu also hailed the defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing the development as a major boost to the party’s national profile and political credibility.
According to him, Obi represents responsible leadership, accountability, and a new political direction capable of inspiring confidence among Nigerians, particularly the youth and grassroots population.
He further stated that the NDC remains committed to internal democracy, inclusiveness, and ensuring that every member has a voice in the party’s affairs.
Referencing Obi’s popular philosophy of rising above limitations and challenging the status quo, Chukwudifu noted that his emergence as one of the youngest state chairmen in the country reflects the party’s openness to youth participation and generational leadership.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), including Mr. Kingsley Ajunwa and Mr. Nonso Okolo of the Election and Party Monitoring Department, supervised the exercise. They confirmed that the congress was peaceful, orderly, and conducted in line with due process, with all positions filled through consensus.
