Abia Inaugurates First Smart School, Flags Off Statewide Education Revolution

The Abia State Government on Tuesday inaugurated the Ogbo Central Smart School in Ipupe, Ubakala, Umuahia South Local Government Area, marking a significant milestone in its education reform agenda.
Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, in a post on his official Facebook page, described the project as the first of 20 Smart Schools to be delivered across the 17 Local Government Areas and the three senatorial districts of Abia State.
The Smart School was commissioned by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa.
According to Governor Otti, the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to building a technology-driven education system capable of preparing learners for the demands of the 21st century.
“The future belongs to societies that invest in knowledge, innovation and technology. That is why we are transforming public education into a technology-driven system that prepares our children not just to earn certificates, but to compete, innovate and lead in a rapidly changing world,” the governor said.
He explained that each Smart School is equipped with interactive learning boards, tablets for pupils, well-trained teachers, a sick bay, modern security systems and a conducive learning environment designed to promote creativity, excellence and character development.
Governor Otti further linked the Smart School initiative to the state’s broader investment in education, innovation and human capital development.
“Yesterday, we launched the Manufacturing Technology (Manu-Tech) University Innovation Pod (UniPod) at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, with the support of the Federal Government, TETFund and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Today, we commissioned a Smart School. Together, these investments reaffirm our commitment to building human capital as the engine of sustainable economic growth.
“We continue to dedicate 20 per cent of our annual budget to education through improved infrastructure, teacher recruitment and retraining, and our policy of free and compulsory basic education. Every child in Abia deserves the opportunity to dream, excel and succeed,” he stated.
The governor called on parents, guardians, community leaders and religious leaders to partner with the government in raising children of good character and safeguarding public educational facilities.
He also issued a strong warning against the vandalism of school infrastructure and the extortion of pupils or parents, stressing that anyone found engaging in such acts would face the full weight of the law.
Governor Otti expressed appreciation to the Honourable Minister of Education for honouring the state with his presence at the commissioning ceremony.
He also commended the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Goodluck Chinedu Ubochi, and his team for their commitment and dedication to the successful delivery of the transformative project.
“Tomorrow is the reward for the investments we make today, and together, we are building a brighter future for every Abia child,” the governor said.
