Mayor Orji Moves Against Flooding, Launches Drainage, Road Sand Clearance Across Onitsha South

The Mayor of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Hon. Chief Emeka Orji, has commenced the process of clearing of drainages and the evacuation of sand deposits from major roads within the council area.

This is part of his proactive measures to reduce flooding and improve road safety during the rainy season.
The exercise, which began on July 1, 2027, is currently ongoing along the Uga Junction Express Road and other strategic locations in Onitsha South.

The initiative is aimed at ensuring the free flow of rainwater through drainage channels, preventing blockages caused by silt and debris, and removing sand washed onto the roads to enhance safe and smooth movement of motorists and pedestrians.

Residents have welcomed the intervention, describing it as a timely response to the challenges posed by the rainy season.

They expressed optimism that the exercise would help reduce flooding, protect lives and property, and improve the overall cleanliness of the environment.

Hon. Chief Emeka Orji reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for the people of Onitsha South through sustained environmental sanitation and infrastructure maintenance.

He also urged the residents to support the exercise by refraining from dumping refuse into drainage channels, noting that proper waste disposal is essential to sustaining the effectiveness of the drainage system.
