World Refugee Day: FIWDE, Bright Horizons Reach 47 IDPs with Health, Hygiene Support

Residents of the Kuchigoro Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Abuja have benefited from a health, hygiene and education outreach organised by the FalconsCare Initiative for Women with Disabilities Empowerment (FIWDE) in partnership with the Bright Horizons Advocacy Network for Persons with Disabilities.
The initiative, held to mark World Refugee Day 2026, reached 47 participants comprising women, men, children and volunteers, with the theme “Until Everyone Is Safe.”
Leading the health session, FIWDE Founder and Chief Executive Director, Uzoamaka Stella Ike, educated women and girls on menstrual hygiene, personal health and the importance of maintaining dignity through proper hygiene practices.
She urged them to reject myths surrounding menstruation, seek appropriate healthcare when needed and ensure that girls remain in school despite the hardships associated with displacement.
The Executive Director of Bright Horizons Advocacy Network, Blessing Igwe James, encouraged parents to prioritise their children’s education, describing it as a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and vulnerability.
Sharing her personal experience as a Deaf woman who overcame barriers to become a disability advocate, James told participants that difficult circumstances should never limit a child’s future.
The outreach also provided residents with an opportunity to discuss challenges confronting the camp, enabling both organisations to better understand the community’s needs and plan future interventions.
Food items and hygiene supplies were distributed to participating families, while the camp’s women leader expressed gratitude to the organisers for providing both practical assistance and emotional support.
FIWDE and Bright Horizons reaffirmed their commitment to advancing health, inclusion and dignity for displaced persons and other underserved communities through sustained community engagement and partnerships.
