Gov. Nwifuru sacks Ebonyi Commissioner for Works

The Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has sacked the state Commissioner for Works, Engr. Stanley Lebechi Mbam.

This was contained in a statement released and signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Monday Uzor, on Saturday.

The statement also directed the sacked commissioner to hand over all government property in his possession to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.

The governor further directed the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works to assume responsibility for the ministry pending further government directives.

The statement read in part: “The Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, FNIOB, FCAI, GGCEHF, has directed the immediate removal from office of the Honourable Commissioner for Works, Engr. Stanley Lebechi Mbam.
“All government property in his possession, including his official vehicle, should be handed over to the Secretary to the State Government.
“Mbam is also directed to transfer responsibilities to the Permanent Secretary in the ministry.”
The statement assured residents that the administration remained focused on “delivering effective governance and improving public infrastructure.”
However, the announcement did not state the specific reason for the governor’s action against Engr. Mbam.
It was, however, suspected that the development may have been connected to mounting criticism over several unfinished projects across the state, despite the constant release of funds, amounting to billions of naira, by the governor for the execution of the projects.
Earlier, in February 2026, Governor Nwifuru suspended Mbam and the Commissioner for Infrastructure Development for Concession, Engr. Ogbonnaya Obasi-Abara, over alleged dereliction of duty. Mbam was later recalled to office.

However, the sack order against Engr. Mbam appears to be the first time the governor has taken such a decisive action against a serving commissioner since he assumed office in May 2023.
