Mrs Otti Applauds Ukwa East Women, Showcases Akwete Weaving Excellence
The First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, has expressed great joy at witnessing a remarkable craftsmanship of women in Ukwa East who are renowned for producing the iconic Akwete fabric.
Mrs. Otti shared her excitement during her visit to Akwete in Ukwa East Local Government Area, where she met with the exceptionally talented women responsible for bringing the stunning Akwete fabric to life.
She described the visit as an absolute delight.
“I am honoured to be the first serving First Lady to visit this remarkable town, and I was truly touched by the warm reception I received,”
“My husband and I are ardent admirers of Akwete fabric. From gracing the runway at Paris Fashion Week to being showcased in Japan and sought after by global designers, Akwete’s beauty and cultural significance are undeniable. I also had the privilege of highlighting its importance at a sideline event during the United Nations General Assembly in New York last year, where I proudly wore Akwete,” she added.
The First Lady commended the women for preserving this invaluable cultural heritage and encouraged them to continue weaving with passion and purpose.
According to Mrs. Otti, their work transcends fabric production; it creates opportunities, generates employment, and contributes to a brighter future for the state.
“Under my husband’s visionary leadership, the Abia State Government remains committed to elevating Akwete fabric to greater heights by promoting it both locally and internationally, as well as investing in its sustainable growth. Indeed, the future holds immense promise,” she added.
