Ocha Brigade Embarks on Sanitation Exercise in Onitsha
By Polycarp Ifeanyi
In its determination to ensure environmental cleanliness in the Onitsha metropolis, the operatives of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, popularly known as the Ocha Brigade, recently embarked on a sanitation exercise in Onitsha, Anambra State.
The operatives of the agency were sighted at Upper Iweka by roving journalists, engaging in sweeping all nooks and crannies of the area and evacuating waste materials.
Meanwhile, the Ocha Brigade, one of the environmental enforcement agencies in Anambra State tasked with addressing indiscriminate dumping of waste and other related offences, not only demonstrated strong patriotism but also total commitment to duty.
The sanitation exercise also took place at the Niger Bridge Head, Owerri Road, and various other locations where waste bins have been positioned.
However, the exercise served as a stern warning to visitors, residents of Onitsha, and the general public who fail to make use of the waste bins provided by the agency after consuming sachet water, bottled water, biscuits, moi-moi, okpa, or any other items that contribute to environmental littering.
The Ocha Brigade, through several announcements on various platforms, including radio and social media, has warned the general public to desist from littering the environment.
According to one of the Onitsha residents: “This is the Upper Iweka axis. Some people have even resorted to coming out at night to dump waste into water drainages. I wonder why some people refuse to comply with the laws in Anambra State.
“Look at the Ocha Brigade undertaking sanitation by themselves. Yet, tomorrow, you will see some people peddling false stories against the Ocha Brigade,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Ocha Brigade has again warned the general public to make use of the waste bins provided at different locations for proper waste disposal. Anyone caught dumping waste indiscriminately, especially into drainage systems, will face the full weight of the law.
