Omalima Crisis: Residents Seek Probe Into Land, Leadership Dispute

As the land and leadership Crisis deepen in in Omalima Layout, Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State residents have called on the State Government, the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant authorities to conduct an impartial investigation into the competing claims and establish the facts.

The land ownership, community leadership and the relationship between landlords and tenants in Omalima Layout, Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, has continued to deepen as opposing groups trade allegations and counter-allegations.

At the centre of the controversy is Mr. Ikechukwu Stanley Umeh, a landlord and reported executive member of the Omalima Landlords Association. His supporters strongly reject allegations portraying him as a land grabber or an individual who intimidates residents.

According to people defending Umeh, his involvement in the community predates the establishment of the Omalima Association of Nigeria, Nkwelle.

They claim that residents and property owners initially approached him and appealed to him to provide leadership because of concerns over protecting their properties and land from what they described as outside interference.
They maintain that Umeh accepted the responsibility and subsequently became chairman, insisting that he did not impose himself on the community.

The situation, however, reportedly became complicated after disagreements emerged within the estate. Umeh was subsequently accused of various offences and was reportedly arrested and detained at the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja.

His supporters have disputed the allegations, claiming that he was wrongly accused and that police investigations raised questions about some of the claims made against him.

One allegation reportedly involved claims that Umeh fired a gun at a community member. His supporters deny the allegation and further allege that Sunday Ekwueme, also known as Sunny Bigman, was involved in efforts to implicate Umeh and allegedly threatened to damage his reputation. These claims could not independently be established at the time of publication.

The dispute has since widened, with allegations being directed at several individuals and groups within the estate.

Some individuals instigating crisis in the community are all land grabbers.

The sources said their involvement in land-related disputes and activities are creating division within the estate.

According to the source,the main problem is tarnishing the name of Mr. Ikechukwu Stanley Umeh, an innocent man who is just trying to bring peace to the community.
The source said the crisis has also moved to social media, where accusations and counter-accusations have continued to circulate.

Residents familiar with the matter have called for caution, urging parties to allow the appropriate authorities to investigate allegations of land grabbing, intimidation, assault, unlawful occupation, shooting and conspiracy rather than relying on social media claims.

One occupant, whose name was withheld, said Umeh should not be branded a land grabber merely because of disagreements surrounding the administration of the estate.

Another occupant, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said Umeh is a landlord who owns property in Omalima Layout and argued that his rights and membership of the landlords’ association should be considered within the association’s constitution and applicable laws.

The crisis has raised concerns about the possibility of a prolonged land and leadership dispute developing into a broader security challenge.

Ultimately, stakeholders say Omalima Layout should remain a community where landlords and tenants can live and own property peacefully, without intimidation or oppression.

Landlords should not be intimidated by tenants, tenants should not be oppressed by landlords, and security agencies should not become instruments for settling private disputes.
The facts, they insist, should be established through proper investigation and due process.
